Best-selling author Beth O’Leary (The Flatshare and The Switch) delivers another entertaining, heart-warming piece of contemporary fiction, this time about first loves and second chances.
SYNOPSIS: Addie Gilbert has never truly gotten over Dylan since their terrible break-up two years ago. So when their cars crash into each other—and Dylan’s is wrecked—at the beginning of a road trip to their mutual friend’s wedding, Addie and her sister, Deb, are not too excited to have to give him and his best friend a ride up to Scotland. Tension and heartache start to simmer as they’re squashed into the same Mini, and as they’re forced to confront their past choices, they’re also reminded that there are two sides to every story. O’Leary weaves this dual POV story while also switching between past and present, taking readers on an enjoyable, emotional trip of their own.
THOUGHTS: I flew through this one. The characters are well-drawn, 3D and realistic, and they each change in a satisfying way over the course of the novel. The prose is accessible, well-written enough that you forget all about the actual words and simply focus on the story, which to me means the author has done her job well. The road trip itself – entertaining! Enough awful things happen to keep the story moving, without it feeling excessive or over-dramatic. I’d recommend this, especially if you’ve enjoyed the author’s other books.
